Why do I write in English?

When you follow my blog you probably have seen some mistakes in the English language I use. I don’t deny that and sometimes I struggle with finding the right words for a blogpost. Writing in English instead of Dutch is a bit harder for me, but I don’t see it as a problem. I see it as a challenge. Actually I didn’t read any comments about the way I write the last couple of months. But even though I think it can be a problem for some of you that my English isn’t totally proper. That’s why I want to make clear what my reasons are for writing in English. Even though I don’t thinks it’s needed and it feels a bit like justifying myself, I just want to do it.

First of all I write in English is because I want to improve my English skills. I want to improve my skills, because I think English is a really important language in the world and I want to be a part of this globalization. Sounds weird, but with my study ‘Geography teacher’ you maybe understand where I’m coming from. I think if you can’t speak/write/read English very well, the world will be faster than you are. For some people that’s not a problem at all and that’s ok, but for me it’s important to be a part of it.

I also want to improve my English for my next study. I don’t know yet what I’m going to do, but it will be a master on the university. Almost all masters are only available in English, so my English has to be really well to follow the master programme. Of course it will be a big change from a study in Dutch to a study in English, but when I prepare well I think it will work. Learning languages was always difficult for me, especially English. So practising a lot is a must for me.

All those reasons are really important for me, but there’s another reasons why I write in English. Even though my blog isn’t that big, I have visitors from all around the world. This is actually the main reason why I started writing in English. I love to be in contact with people all around the world and I love to get to know other cultures. It’s like traveling on the laptop.

It started all with my first trip alone to Palermo with my high school class. The first time on the plane, the first time alone on a trip and the first time an exchange. Now I’m preparing with my classmates for my third exchange to Dublin next month. I just love to have contacts all around the world. So a comment from a reading from Australia makes me really happy. It gives a magical feeling, like the world is smaller than it looks like.

So even though my English has its mistakes, I don’t think I will change it to Dutch. I also think it’s important to have a blog with a proper language use, but I’m trying my best for it and there’s nothing more I can do about it. Sometimes it takes me hours to write one blogpost, just to find the right words and sometimes I’m in my ‘English-mood’ and than it’s much more easier. I just love to write and I think writing in English makes it worth in, because of all the comments from all around the world.

Feel free to give feedback about my English use. I think feedback is always welcome, but remember that feedback is something else than criticize.
